In conversation with Juliet Rosenfeld: ethics, candour & changing tides

"For me, the beauty of psychoanalysis is that it is such a radical way of thinking about the mind."

In January of this year, the BPC hosted a CPD event on the importance of the Duty of Candour. For the event, psychoanalyst Allessandra Lemma summarised the importance of professional candour, based on her work First Principles: Applied Ethics for Psychoanalytic Practice. Joining her for a discussion on the considerations raised, was psychoanalyst Juliet Rosenfeld who has recently published her second book Affairs: True Stories of Love, Lies, Hope and Desire.

We caught up with Juliet after the event to discuss these themes further, and to talk about her book as well as her ongoing PhD research.

Hierarchies and Fragmentations in Psychoanalysis

The British Psychotherapy Foundation, UK Council for Psychotherapy and the Council for Psychoanalysis and Jungian Analysis are collaborating on an innovative project designed to promote open, ongoing discussions about psychoanalysis and Jungian psychotherapy in the 21st century. This project focuses on addressing professional and institutional challenges that have previously contributed to hierarchy, rivalry and division within the field.

The project features three online workshops followed by an in-person conference.

BPC Scholar and BPF Director of Academic and Strategic Development, Wayne Full is still looking for speakers for the conference. Click here to contact him if you're interested. Click below to learn more about the project.

Salma Siddique, Research Lead, Clinical Anthropologist, Psychotherapist

Salma Siddique, Research Lead for Counselling Studies and Integrative Healthcare at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI Moray) and formerly Associate Professor of Psychoanalytic Anthropology in Human Development at a New England university, has built an entire scholarly and clinical life in that unsettled, productive in-between.

She has written that she works "where psychoanalysis, anthropology and the medical humanities press against one another, not to resolve the friction, but because the friction is where the thinking happens" (Siddique, UHI Moray Research Profile). This is not a methodological position arrived at by convenience. It is a form of intellectual honesty, a refusal to let the category do the work that the thinking must do.
