Alexandra Marinou

Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

About Alexandra Marinou

I am a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist with many years of academic and clinical experience. I am a prospective candidate in training in Psychoanalysis at the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London. I practice in North London and Central London and remotely where appropriate. I work within guidelines for the profession, having regular supervision and professional development. I practice in English and in Greek. I am a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF).

I have worked for over 15 years as a Senior Clinician and Clinical Service Manager in Specialist Mental Health services (Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust), in third sector charities and in private practice as a Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor.

In my private practice I specialise in working with individual adults (from young adults to older age), offering psychotherapy to a broad range of psychological and emotional difficulties, working flexibly depending on the particular problems and needs of each individual. I have a culturally sensitive perspective in my practice paying close attention to issues around identity, gender, race and social class.

I hold an MSc in Psychology (Panteion University of Political and Social Sciences), an MSc in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (Institute of Psychiatry), Postgraduate Diplomas in Foundations in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and in Inter-cultural Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (Tavistock NHS Trust) and have attended two years of studies in Inter-disciplinary Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (Tavistock NHS Trust).

I offer psychoanalytic consultations which involve a meeting or a series of meetings (each lasting an hour and a half) in a confidential and contained setting to understand the nature of an individual's difficulties and what treatment might be appropriate. Following the initial consultations, the form and frequency of treatment is discussed with each individual.

Psychotherapy services involve sessions occurring at regular intervals within a setting that offers the opportunity for the individual to develop an understanding of themselves and their internal world and behaviours, considering both the past and the present with the aim of facilitating a more fulfilling life.

I also provide psychotherapy services for people who are experiencing a possible range of psychological difficulties in their everyday life. These may include any of the following:

Abuse and trauma
Difficulty in relationships or work
Anxiety and panic attacks
Bereavement
Depression, self-destructive or suicidal feelings
Personality problems
Eating disorders
Personality problems
Physical symptoms which are medically unexplained
Sexual problems or confusion about identity

If after the initial consultation psychotherapy is deemed to be unsuitable for the individual other forms of treatment can be recommended.

I also offer psychodynamically informed clinical supervision to Psychotherapy and Counselling trainees and other professionals including Clinical and Counselling Psychologists and Clinical Social Workers. Supervision frequency varies depending on clinical need and complexity.
