Thomas Harris

I am a clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist with a particular interest in longer term in-person therapy. I offer psychotherapeutic consultations and psychoanalytic psychotherapy on an open-ended basis, with sessions once, twice or three times weekly.

As the starting point for my approach, the initial consultation is an in-depth exploration of the situation that has led to seeking help, with the aim of working out together what is most likely to improve matters; this may be a useful end in itself, or the foundation for the therapeutic work to follow.

I am an experienced clinician and used to working with adults of diverse backgrounds, across the age range – from late adolescence to later life – in relation to a broad spectrum of presenting difficulties and mental health conditions. My approach to psychotherapy – along with my understanding of psychological helping in general – is informed by both my professional trainings, in clinical psychology and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, both of which were undertaken in the NHS.

In addition to my private practice, my professional history includes extensive experience as a clinical psychologist in NHS services for people with severe and complex mental health conditions; I have also worked as a clinical tutor with the clinical psychology training programme at University College London.

I have supervised mental health professionals (psychologists, counsellors and therapists) and people in training for such roles in a variety of contexts over the years and welcome supervision enquiries from people who have completed accredited therapy trainings.

I am a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS). I am registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and registered as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), for which my Member Institution is the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists (TSP).
