Description

Learning to Live and to Die: Doubt and Certainty in Working with a Terminally Ill Young Adolescent Patient.

This paper reflects on clinical work from over 20 years ago, when Gillian Ingall was a newly qualified Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist working with a terminally ill adolescent patient who had already experienced profound losses.
It explores the intense interplay of doubt and certainty in her clinical experience – her uncertainty about what could be offered in the face of overwhelming suffering, contrasted with the patient’s apparent capacity to engage with and “believe” her losses.

Gillian also briefly considers how themes of doubt and certainty have emerged in her wider work with children and adolescents.

Gillian Ingall is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist who trained and worked at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, later qualifying as a psychoanalyst with the BPS. She now works in private practice in London and Canterbury.
