From the early phallic stage and its critiques to modern psychoanalytic perspectives, the talk highlights how masculinity does reflect a more balanced, inclusive dimension. Additionally, the speaker introduces the concept of ‘seminal masculinity,’ which goes beyond the phallic stage to emphasize a deeper, more fertile, and nurturing aspect of masculinity. Karl Figlio is Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex; Clinical Associate, British Psychoanalytical Society and Senior Member, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association, BPF. Recent publications include: Remembering as Reparation: Psychoanalysis and Historical Memory (Palgrave, 2017) and Rethinking the Psychoanalysis of Masculinity: From Toxic to Seminal (Routledge 2024). He is working on a book, entitled Depressive Crisis and Seeds of Reparation.
