Description

The Hallam Institute is delighted to announce that Karl Figlio will be speaking in our next online event on Saturday 28th February on “What and Where is the Father and His Masculinity”.

Join us for an insightful event where our colleague, Karl Figlio, explores the evolution of Freud’s concept of masculinity. From the early phallic stage and its critiques to modern psychoanalytic perspectives, the talk highlights how masculinity does reflect a more balanced, inclusive dimension. Additionally, the speaker introduces the concept of ‘seminal masculinity,’ which goes beyond the phallic stage to emphasize a deeper, more fertile, and nurturing aspect of masculinity. Don’t miss this engaging exploration of psychoanalytic theory and its contemporary relevance.

Karl Figlio is Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex; Clinical Associate, British Psychoanalytical Society and Senior Member, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association, BPF. Recent publications include: Remembering as Reparation: Psychoanalysis and Historical Memory (Palgrave, 2017) and Rethinking the Psychoanalysis of Masculinity: From Toxic to Seminal (Routledge 2024). He is working on a book, entitled Depressive Crisis and Seeds of Reparation.
