“I think you’re concerned that I’m a white, Eurocentric, normative, cis-gendered, binary thinker who should be deposited in the dustbin of history” – David Morgan.
This paper explores “no-go areas” in psychoanalysis – topics and dynamics central to psychic life that are avoided or left unexamined. Using clinical cases, institutional analysis, and theory, it looks at how the field engages with issues like race, religion, gender, and systemic oppression. Drawing on examples such as the Tavistock Clinic’s work on gender identity, the experiences of Black analysts, and tensions within psychoanalytic institutions, it argues for a shift in practice that addresses these areas while preserving a focus on the unconscious.
