Description
The TFP-UK one-year weekly online teaching seminar on Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) for patients with a personality disorder, September 2026 – June 2027, Tuesday mornings from 9-10.45.
TFP is an adapted form of psychodynamic psychotherapy developed by Otto Kernberg and colleagues for patients with a personality disorder. It is grounded in object relations theory and places the transference relationship at the centre of treatment. TFP also focuses on patients’ functioning in life outside the consulting room. Treatment aims are agreed relating to improving functioning at work, intimate relationships and friendships. The aims are ambitious in scope and tether treatment closely to life-problems.
The TFP is structured so as to allow classical psychoanalytic techniques to be used effectively with patients who significantly act-out and/or are anxiously avoidant of work or relationships. The structure is aided by a detailed structural assessment, and a therapeutic frame that includes a treatment contract which spells out the responsibilities and commitments needed. These include reliably attending, and work on the aims of treatment between sessions, reducing and stopping destructive behaviours that would stop therapy working and threaten the patient’s safety. For example, the patient must commit to stop substance misuse or cutting, and will not act on suicidal impulses but instead will take steps to protect themselves and seek help, if needed, between sessions. These agreements protect the therapeutic work. Breaches of the contract, when they occur, are considered in terms of psychodynamics.
For more information, see tfpintroductorycourseuk.co.uk which has the dates of three online Q & A sessions about the course.
There will also be a BPF two-hour talk and discussion session on 11th March, 6-8, advertised on the BPC website, or contact Jonathan.Radcliffe@slam.nhs.uk
