Event description:
This workshop by the editors of New Associations, our flagship psychoanalytic magazine, will take you through the process of writing an article step-by-step — from how to come up with an idea in the first place, to how to ethically turn it into a publishable article.
New Associations brings psychoanalytic and psychodynamic thinking to social, cultural and political issues. We publish articles of 1,000 words. The magazine is published three times per year by the British Psychoanalytic Council.
We are keen to publish a wide range of new voices from within our clinical community of trainees and practitioners. If you have ever been curious about writing, this is your opportunity to get started, and to ask any questions you might have.
About the speakers
Noreen Giffney is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. She is the author of the book, The Culture-Breast in Psychoanalysis: Cultural Experiences and the Clinic (Routledge 2021), and the author and/or editor of additional articles, chapters, and six other books on psychoanalysis and/or psychosocial studies. She is interested in the emotional and unconscious use we make of cultural objects (film, art, literature, music, immersive media); Wilfred Bion’s writings; and the clinical impact of psychosocial factors on the transference-countertransference dynamic. She is the director of the international, interdisciplinary ‘Psychoanalysis +’ initiative, and is a lecturer and a researcher at Ulster University, Belfast. Noreen has worked as an editor for twenty-five years. Noreen is the joint editor-in-chief of New Associations.
Emmanuelle Smith is a BPC-registered psychodynamic psychotherapist in private practice, with experience working in NHS secondary mental health care as part of South London and Maudsley Trust. Emmanuelle has a previous career as a journalist, including six years at the Financial Times, and has written a children’s book, Park Life (Fisherton Press 2016). She has also worked in cinemas, both front of house and as a 35mm cinema projectionist. Emmanuelle holds a BA Philosophy from the University of Southampton; an MA Journalism from Goldsmiths, University of London; Qualified Teacher Status (Canterbury Christ Church University) and a PGDip in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice from WPF, accredited by the University of Roehampton.
Niamh Downes is the Managing Editor of New Associations and the Communications Manager at the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). Her role at the BPC entails overseeing all outgoing communications sent to the BPC’s Registrants, members such as Trainees and the Scholars’ Network, as well as the general public. She’s particularly motivated by making psychoanalytic ideas more accessable and reachable to wider members of the public. Her role for the magazine includes logistical support such as facilitating the illustrations, proofing, printing and mailing New Associations to it’s subscribers.
