NHS Guidance Recognises Psychoanalytic Professional Titles
NHS England have published their guidance on the registration requirements needed to use psychological professions titles in their services, including Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst and Jungian analyst.
The BPC are delighted that our Registrants’ – alongside our other PCPB partners – are officially recognised by NHS England.
The British Psychoanalytic Council, alongside its PCPB partners, welcomes new guidance by the NHS entitled: Guidance on NHS registration requirements for use of psychological professions titles.
As a regulator, we believe this guidance is a contstructive and encouraging step. This new documentation:
- Promotes clarity and consistency within NHS commission services.
- Recognises the important and significant contribution of psychological professions within the NHS, namely the work of BPC Registrants working under titles such as Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst and Jungian analyst.
- Further reinforces the BPC and other PSA accredited Registers as legitimate routes to safe, accredited therapy.
- Uses structures previously laid out by the SCoPEd Framework in outlining professional requirements.
Chief Executive of the BPC, Greg Ross-Sampson says this about the new NHS Guidance:
“It’s an encouraging step to see our work as a regulator and the work of our Registrants recognised in this official NHS guidance. We believe in safe, psychoanalytic therapy and a move towards consistency and transparency in the NHS can only mean a safer and less daunting environment for patients in need of talking therapy.”
The BPC Chair of Trustees, Lee Smith says:
“Psychoanalytic services are crucial to a holistic and fair NHS psychological service. It’s a great step to see BPC accrecited titles recognised in this way. There is so much positive psychoanalytic work going on in the NHS and we hope this step is one initiative of many in recognising and enhancing this work.”
